Scientists Publish Letter Citing Flaws in Study Purporting BPA Safety

Twenty-four scientists have just published a letter in “Toxicological Sciences” describing a fatal flaw in work done in an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) lab purporting to show that the chemical bisphenol A (BPA) is safe. The study of interest was published in autumn 2009 (Ryan et al 2009). For example, the positive control dose is 10-15 times higher than the dose used in today’s birth control pills (correcting for body weight differences between rats and women). That dose in women causes temporary sterility in 99.7% of women exposed. Read the letter here
