In his latest column, “New York Times” op-ed columnist Nicholas D. Kristof asks about the broader public health challenges Americans face because of possible contaminants in our water, air, or even plastic containers in our kitchens. Breast cancer risk among 50-year-old white women has soared to 12 percent today and asthma rates have tripled over the past 25 years, and one contributing factor may be the chemicals used in everyday products. According to the Children’s Environmental Health Center at Mount Sinai, more than 80,000 new chemicals have been developed since World War II, yet fewer than 20 percent have been tested for toxicity to children.
