BPA and Phthalates on Maine’s List of 1,700 Chemicals of “High Concern”

According to the “Bangor Daily News,” the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the Maine Center for Disease Control and Prevention recently released a list of about 1,700 “chemicals of high concern”— substances that pose a significant risk to human health that also are used in manufacturing common consumer goods. State officials and environmental health advocates believe this is an important step toward protecting Maine’s natural environment, as well as children and women of childbearing age, from the toxic effects of chemicals. The list includes compounds such as phthalates and bisphenol A (BPA), which are found in some plastic bottles, plastic shower curtains, cosmetics, and some toys.
