Consumers Avoid Polycarbonate Plastic Bottles Due to Concerns about Plastic Chemicals

According to Toronto’s “Globe and Mail,” many people are avoiding polycarbonate bottles and food containers because of reports that such products leach trace amounts of an estrogen mimicking chemical known as bisphenol A (BPA). Environmental Defence, a Toronto-based conservation group that is lobbying the federal government to ban plastics containing BPA from food-contact uses, recommends consumers use glass bottles or a non-toxic plastic. According to the article, other chemicals in plastics products, in addition to BPA, may also be a cause for concern. PET or polyethylene terephthalate plastic bottles, often used for soft-drink and single-use water bottles may leak antimony, a heavy metal.
