Can plastic ‘alter human cells’?

USA Today reports that parents are increasingly switching to bisphenol A- and phthalate-free food and beverage containers as such chemicals may have adverse effects on human health, especially the health of children. According to a 2000 study conducted by the CDC, 75% of people tested had phthalates in their urine and 95% of Americans have detectable levels of bisphenol A in their bodies.
