California Becomes First State to Ban Phthalates

The Associated Press reports Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill this past Sunday banning items such as plastic baby bottles and toys that contain more than a trace amount of phthalates, chemicals allegedly linked to developmental problems. California is the first state in the US to impose limits on such chemicals used in plastics products. The EU and at least 14 other countries have previously banned phthalates after studies reportedly found the chemical interferes with hormones that might lead to early puberty, reproduction defects and other health problems.
