An Expose on Plastics Recycling

CBS Sunday Morning recently aired a special called “A Wonder Material You Can’t Get Rid Of,” which highlighted the nationwide problem with recycling plastic bags and other plastics products. According to the special, each of us generates more than 1,600 pounds of garbage every year and “much of it comes from plastic bags, plastic water bottles and plastic packaging,” which “will be around for the next 1,000 years.” Further, CBS asserts that the plastics industry has come under pressure to boost the relatively low percentage of plastic recycling, citing that “only about a quarter of plastic bottles – and just 5 percent of plastic bags – get recycled.”
