Korea to Follow UK in Banning Possibly Toxic Chemicals in Children’s Goods

According to the Korean Times, the Ministry of Environment will ban chemicals that can harm children’s health, including phthalates used in toys and plastic bags. The ministry reportedly said that it would propose a bill to ban certain chemicals from being used in products for children 13 years old and younger as such chemicals are said to be endocrine disrupters or likely to cause health problems. Manufacturers that violate the law will reportedly be sentenced to up to five years in prison or sentenced to a fine amounting up to 50 million won if the bill is passed by the National Assembly.
