San Francisco to become first city in U.S. to ban phthalates and bisphenol A

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, San Francisco may soon be the “only jurisdiction in the world to ban products with bisphenol A, or BPA, and the first in the United States to ban those containing phthalates.” San Francisco’s proposed ordinance banning the sale of baby bottles, toys and other objects used by young children containing possibly toxic chemicals, such as phthalates and bisphenol A, goes into effect on December 1, 2006. The new law is allegedly in response to increasing concerns by scientists that phthalates may disrupt normal hormone function and cause other human ailments.
