Consumers Choose Glass for Sustainability and Organics

Food Engineering magazine reports on the increasing pressure for all packaging material companies to use sustainable packaging. While plastic companies are manufacturing polylactic acid (PLA) polymer packaging, which reportedly does not perform well with heat, industry insiders are applauding glass packaging in its sustainable efforts, and organic foods suppliers are reportedly taking notice. According to Kevin Stevens, Vice President Global Marketing, O-I, “Organic foods suppliers are contacting us about glass packaging, saying ‘This helps attract consumers who are inclined to buy our products.’ Two firms selling to the European market—Marbelize tuna in Ecuador and Lowicz tomato sauce in Poland—converted from cans to glass jars, and Campbell Soup’s Pace salsa recently rolled out a 30-oz. glass package.
