Researchers involved in conducting the “Pilot Study of Urinary Biomarkers of Phytoestrogens, Phthalates, and Phenols in Girls” aimed to study the hormonally active environmental agents in U.S. children by race, age, sex and geography.
The researchers used exposure biomarkers in children to study female pubertal development and found that phthalates and bisphenol A, two chemicals widely used in the production of plastics packaging and other plastics materials, were detected in 67-100% of the samples from the young girls.
