According to Counterpunch Magazine, the “bottle water industry is an entirely needless affectation,” accounting for the undercutting of public water, the disfigurement of landscapes, and most importantly, exposing trusting bottled water consumers to serious health risks. This article reports that the bottled water industry is one built on misguidance, and is less a commodity than a fashion trend. From chemical and bacterial contaminations to the enormous increase in the world production of plastic bottles, this article alleges that the bottle water industry is hurting consumers and our planet.

Counterpunch Magazine further reports that plastic bottle factories create and release toxic waste, are made from toxic and carcinogenic chemicals, such as phthalates, and have become a major component of roadside litter. The article cites facts about the worldwide boom in bottle water from the book “In the Bottle, An Exposé of the Bottled Water Industry,” focusing on the consequences of treating bottled water as a commodity.
